Newcastle students to strike

NEWCASTLE — Resistance members at high schools and the university here plan to walk out of class on Friday, April 14 to protest against mandatory sentencing. An overwhelming response from their classmates and disgust at racism have hardened students' resolve to act.
Renaye Laryman explained that high school students are prepared to act against mandatory sentencing, even if John Howard is not. "We're going to walk out of school to protest against government racism", she said.
Mel Sadler, a University of Newcastle student, said students are angry: "The government's blatant disregard for human rights has forced students into action".
The students will meet at 2pm on April 14 in the Hunter Street Mall.
